Historical and digital Archival Internship

DV Entertainment is offering a historical and digital archival internship for college level film or journalism students. This internship will take place in Staunton, VA between January 2023 and March 2023.

Goals for our Internship

Tasks learned and accomplished would include, but not limited to, scanning documents, scanning printed photographs, converting recordings from cassette tape or other analog formats to digital using a digital field recorders, converting analog, tape, film video formats into digital, and any other means of gathering, digitizing, or recording historical documents for use in film and TV projects. Preparation and organizing tasks will include assisting with logging, filming and backing up all media being archives based on the companies pre-set format and filing structures commonly known as Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).

The specific project this internship will do work on is archiving or digitizing video/film, photos, documents, and audio from the Vickers family genealogy collection that includes historical records of the Vickers family, the Newtown Kids youth program from the early 1990's, the black beauticians Club from the early to late 21st century, and other historical records relevant to the black community in Staunton and the predominantly black neighborhood formally known as Sunnyside in Staunton VA that are being trusted to us in support of the documentary film, "Newtown Kids", and "The Central Avenue Urban Renewal Project." (working title)

Available Openings: This internship is open to 1 or 2 students who would be working independently/at different times.

Internship Location: Staunton, VA

Time Commitment: 5 Days Total.

1 day (approx 2-3 hours) online/zoom orientation
4 days of 8 hour work day each to formally complete their internship and receive a letter of completion. These days should take place within the first 8 weeks of the winter 2023 semester.

Candidates can expect in learn and perform some of the following tasks

Production Assistance tasks
Using various media copying tools (scanners, audio recorders, DSLR cameras, film scanners, DVD roms)
File management for team projects
Relationship building with talent, individuals or other points of story access
Corresponding with clients and remote team members

Strong verbal and writing skills
A clean professional appearance & good hygiene
A laptop computer
Ability to get to Staunton, VA for the 4 days of required in person work
A willingness to learn
Being Punctual

Areas of interest: This internship is best suited for film or journalism students who are interested in getting more experience in historical and archival research for stories or film projects as well as the process of collecting and gathering that material into digital form to be used by production. In addition, this internship will give you experience in pre-production stages of film. You will also gain experience in relationship building and trust to gain access to privately held archives, or gaining access to public records. This is NOT an on-set internship, no filming will be taking place.

Translation To Film Positions/Jobs: This internship would be a fitting experience for future Production Assistant work, office production assistant work, associate producer, working as a historical/archival producer, as well as working in journalism on extensively researched stories that require significant historical material.

Compensation: A small daily per diem will be provided to help offset travel costs and a single meal for each day interns travel to Staunton to work their assigned internship days for students traveling from outside the local area (local area is considered anywhere in Augusta County, VA)
